c40-header

Mexico City, Mexico– Tomorrow, Mayor Adler will be attending and speaking at this year’s C40 Mayors Summit 2016 in Mexico City. From November 30 to December 2, 2016, the biennial C40 Mayors Summit will bring together the largest group of local leaders and climate stakeholders since COP21. He and Council Member Sabino “Pio” Renteria have been leading a trade delegation in Mexico since Monday.

“Economic growth and environmental stewardship enhance one another in Austin. We thrive because we prioritize both,” said Mayor Adler. “Cities will help lead the way on climate change, because many of the relevant decisions with transit, renewable energy generation, and conservation are being made at the local level.”

On Thursday, Mayor Adler will be speaking on a panel entitled “Compact, Connected, Resilient Cities: Planning our Future City.”

The Summit will bring together more than 40 mayors from the world’s largest and most influential cities and hundreds of urban and sustainability leaders who are committed to taking meaningful action on climate change, including business leaders of Fortune 500 companies; elected officials at all levels of government; prominent NGO leaders; internationally-renowned climate experts; and celebrity activists.

Austin has become a world leader in sustainability, committing to goals such as carbon-free municipal operations by 2020, zero waste by 2040, and net zero carbon emissions community wide by 2050.

In 1995, Austin secured its first 10MW of wind power with LCRA and has been consistently adding renewables to its portfolio bringing Austin to 28% renewable energy today. In 2015, the City of Austin invested in a ~450MW utility-scale solar power purchase agreement in West Texas, more than doubling the entire solar portfolio of the state of Texas. These purchases will put renewable energy generation at close to 40%, easily surpassing our goal of 35% renewable energy by 2020. In 2014 the new Generation Plan for Austin Energy was approved, which supports an increase in the amount of renewable energy to 55 percent of customer demand, as well as investments in local storage and demand response by 2025.

Also at the Summit, current C40 Chair and Rio de Janeiro Mayor Eduardo Paes will officially hand over the role to C40 Chair-Elect and Paris Mayor Anne Hidalgo, who will be the first woman to chair the organization. Here, she will outline her vision and priorities for C40 in her role as chair.
